If you have Jesus, you have everything.James, the brother of Jesus, wrote a very practical book. Brief, but poignantly delivered, he suggests all Christians to take a hard look at their lives. I needed to read his first passage, especially. During a group bible study the other day, the Word revealed to me how I let the devil have "little victories" that rob my joy, leaving me wandering from the truth. He hits me real hard with these words from God:
Trials and Temptations (James 1:2-18) "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from The Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.
The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
When tempted, no one should say, 'God is tempting me.' For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first-fruits of all he created."
When I look at my life before and after Christ, I can see how (as Paul says in 1 Peter 2:13), "it is
God who works in us to will and to act according to his good purpose." My thoughts are evil, and I don't ask God for help enough to restore unto me the joy of salvation through his perfect gift being Jesus Christ our Lord.
So what does God want us to do for His good anyways? James continues to share the Word and gives us a good answer in the last verse:
Listening and Doing (James 1:19-27)"My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently in the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it -- he will be blessed in what he does.
If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."
Submit Yourselves to God (James 4:1-10) "What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before The Lord, and he will lift you up."
Man, this is hard to swallow. I admit, I am quick to speak and slow to listen. This shows my pride. This shows my insecurity. What a wretched man I am! Thanks be to God who has loved me despite my sin, and shown me how to live according to the righteousness which is Christ. Jesus healed the sick, and helped the helpless. Most importantly for me, he humbled the prideful like me. Thinking I can find wisdom on my own is folly, yet having received Christ, I now love his Word. I now know God, and love God with all my heart.
But I'm still suffering; complaining instead of considering it
pure joy.
My faith is small, and my prayers are weak. I know it is because I lack wisdom, and I lack patience. James reminds me:
Patience in Suffering (James 5:7-12) "Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near. Don't grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!
Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of The Lord. As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what The Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. Above all, my brothers, do not swear -- not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your 'Yes' be yes, and your 'No,' no, or you will be condemned."
God graciously grants me patience as I am reminded that there is no condemnation for those who are healed by Christ, his Son, through the confession of sins and faithful prayers. God's grace humbles me and brings me back to the innocence of His love for me. Oh, how he loves to seek and save the lost -- including those like me who have wandered from the truth.
Joyfully In Christ,
Jon
